Julio points me at the forthcoming
HP crossfire media PC, which is a touchscreen vista PC with a
focus on media, plus a slot in the front for five year olds to put
bits of toast. This is very nice, even though you'd need to scub
the OS to get Amarok to work on it.
One of the subtle implications of this and the mac mini systems
is that a wide screen LCD and PC with good broadband connectivity
can supplant the TV for a lot of uses. Think about it. If you only
had one machine, which would it be: the television or the laptop?
More importantly, a lot of the content is coming over the net. If
you get your TV from youtube, bittorrent or the Venice Project, why
use a television? The TV, you replace with a projector for cinema
and gaming, which you hook up the same PC.
Incidentally, I know everyone talks about the need for new GUIs
for touchscreen or television based PC interaction, but what about
large monitors? I've just gone to a wide-screen 23 inch LCD at
work, and while its fantastic, the max-window-size option of a
maximise button is just too big. Why would I ever want anything
full screen, when your screen is huge. You really need multiple
sizes, "normal", "large" and then full screen, which is the
exception not the rule, and comes with allocation of 100% of the
display area
